A Travellers Guide to Exploring the World Safely

August 14, 2023

Travelling the world is one of the most wondrous things to do in life. The sheer excitement of experiencing somewhere new is a feeling that many chase their entire lives. Whether it is a solo trip around the world, an outback adventure with friends or a family holiday on a tropical island – we all know that holiday feeling.

It’s easy to approach international (or even domestic) travel with rose-tinted glasses, immersing yourself fully in the excitement of the trip and ignoring any thought of the what-ifs. Let’s face it, no one wants to be the one putting a damper on the holiday by asking about the odds of natural disasters or the safety of the area of that bargain hotel.

Luckily, there are a few simple travel hacks to make sure you can enjoy your holiday while keeping the rose-tinted glasses on.

Copy your documents

Travel 101 is ensuring you have a copy of your documentation – passports, licenses, visas, hotel bookings, flight details, and travel insurance documents – we recommend a printed version in case you’re unable to access the documents digitally.

If your passport or visa is stolen, a copy of the document may be the difference between being able to travel to your nearest embassy or not. Saying you promise you have a passport and visa, isn’t enough to prove you’re not in the country illegally, so without a copy of your documents it’s easy to find yourself in hot water.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is one thing, correct and adequate cover is another. It’s easy to jump online and purchase cheap coverage in a matter of minutes, but do you really know what you’re covered for or if the coverage is right for you and your destination?

Will it cover you for cancellations? Are you covered for snow sports or riding a motorbike? Sitting down with a trained travel agent can be the difference between paying extra for things you don’t need, or worse, finding out the hard way you’re not covered after something has gone wrong.

Stay up to date with travel advice

It’s easy to land at your destination and melt right into holiday mode. Your phone stays on aeroplane mode, news notifications are muted, and the only source of ‘real-world’ connection you have is the quick Instagram logon to see who liked your latest travel pic.

While this is exactly what a holiday should be, it’s important to stay up to date with destination risks and travel advice. No one wants to stay glued to their phone ‘just in case’, so Cover-More developed their Cover-More App – the aptly named phone application designed to help you stay in holiday mode while knowing you’ll also be advised of any travel advice you need to know.

From destination risk ratings and up-to-date travel advice to real-time safety alerts and tap-to-call 24/7 emergency assistance, the Cover-More app knows where you are and
provides you with assistance for that location. Want to know all about the local customs and laws of your destination? Or the best means of public transport when you arrive? The Cover-More app stays up to date while you soak up the sun and enjoy that second cocktail.

Download offline maps

Getting lost in an unknown city is an easy way to end up where you shouldn’t be right when you need to be somewhere else.

Most map applications now have the option to download offline maps of the cities you’re going to, allowing you to see exactly where you are on the map in real-time, and search for addresses without needing wifi or the internet.
